COLORADO

Workplace Accommodation for Nursing Mothers Act - Colorado is the 16th state in the nation to pass legislation regarding breastfeeding support in the workplace. Effective August 7, 2008, employers are required to provide reasonable break time, make reasonable efforts to provide suitable, private space for mothers to express breastmilk in the workplace, and not discriminate against them for doing so. Breastfeeding in Public Act - In 2004, Colorado passed a law stating a mother has the right to breastfeed in any place that she has the right to be. (Colorado Revised Statute 25-6-302). more info...

Pregnancy Discrimination Act - A woman's right to breastfeed and/or pump at work (without being discriminated against) is essentially protected under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, an amendment made in 1978 to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. more info...

Breastfeeding Promotion Act - The Breastfeeding Promotion Act, currently being considered by Congress, would amend the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to specifically protect breastfeeding. It would also provide tax incentives for businesses that establish private lactation areas in the workplace. more info...

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Family Leave Insurance Act- The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), enacted in 1993, allows employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a new son or daughter, or family member who is ill, or to recover the employee's own illness. Specific criteria must be met to qualify for FMLA. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), author of the landmark FMLA, continues to work on passing a paid family leave law (Family Leave Insurance Act), which he introduced in June, 2007. more info on Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 | Family Leave Insurance Act
