The Colorado Breastfeeding Coalition (COBFC) is a non-profit, volunteer organization comprised of health care professionals and breastfeeding supporters who work to ensure the health of Colorado families through the promotion and support of breastfeeding. The task force works to create a unified breastfeeding promotion and support effort state-wide. In recent years the task force:

Supports ongoing efforts to enact breastfeeding legislation in Colorado. In 2004 Colorado passed legislation giving mothers the right to breastfeed anywhere they have the right to be. In 2006 the task force introduced legislation to support lactation accommodation in the workplace.

Sponsors educational meetings. Each year the task force provides funds to support speakers at local lactation conferences and some years provides scholarships for health care professionals to attend breastfeeding trainings.

Sponsors breastfeeding research and program development. Funds are supporting the development of a 1-credit online lactation course for nurses. Task force funds also supported the research of and interventions for child care centers to create supportive breastfeeding environments. View the product at www.infanet.cahs.colostate.edu/.

Publishes the Colorado Breastfeeding Update newsletter. A quarterly newsletter distributed to nearly 2,000 health care professionals statewide.

Supports activities to increase breastfeeding awareness. The task force web site lists local events, breastfeeding re-sources, and breastfeeding news. Each year the task force contributes to an effort to recognize work sites as “Baby Friendly.” Other activities supported by the task force were the 2007 Mile High Breastfeeding Event, the 2006 Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge, and the production of “Babies Were Born to Be Breastfed” bumper stickers and the Colorado Breastfeeding Card.
