Colorado Workplace Accommodations for Nursing Mothers Colorado is the 16th state in the nation to pass legislation regarding breastfeeding support in the workplace.  Effective August 7, 2008, employers are required to provide reasonable break time, make reasonable efforts to provide suitable, private space for mothers to express breastmilk in the workplace, and not discriminate against them for doing so. This two-page document provides the information and tips you need to continue breastfeeding after returning to work. Colorado Can Do 5!
Soon to be new mothers… here is one way to ensure that you and your healthy newborn get breastfeeding off to a good start so that you can breastfeed longer:  Ask for the Colorado Can Do 5! These are five hospital maternity care practices that will help you be successful with breastfeeding:

  1. Infants are breastfed in the first hour after birth.
  2. Infants stay in the same room as their mothers.
  3. Infants are fed only breast milk and receive no supplementation.
  4. No pacifier is used.
  5. Staff gives mothers a telephone number to call for help with breastfeeding.

Download the Colorado Can Do 5! crib card and take it to the hospital with you to let hospital staff know your wishes.  more info…
